IN Giant Poached.

Austin Spain, of Lynn, Ind., killed what a Boone & Crockett official said was the “deer of a lifetime.”

The only problem? Spain illegally poached the buck—his second this season in a state that only allows one per year.

According to Indiana state officials and a spokesman with B&C, the deer scored somewhere in the 180-inch range with 16 points, qualifying it for the national record books. But after Spain submitted a statement last week admitting that he had not shot it in Michigan per his original claim, he was charged with several misdemeanors relating to the incident, according to IndyStar.com. He also could face jail time if convicted.

Indiana conservation officer Jake Carlile said Spain killed his first buck in early November, and then shot the trophy buck the weekend of the Nov. 17. After an investigation into the incident, charges were brought against Spain and the deer was confiscated from a local taxidermy shop.

Keith Balfourd, a spokesman with B&C, said it’s rare for most hunters to ever see a deer of that caliber, and a shame that Spain stole the opportunity from someone else.

“I have hunted whitetail deer for 35 years and I haven’t shot one that was 160 inches. Less than one half of 1 percent of hunters ever take a Boone & Crockett-qualifying trophy.”

“There are lots of concerns when it comes to poaching. Essentially, deer, and wildlife in general, belong to the public. It’s a very unique model in North America. Wildlife doesn’t belong to the government, it doesn’t belong to corporations and it doesn’t belong to royalty. By taking more than his fair share, this hunter has taken from the citizens of that state,” Balfourd told IndyStar.com.

It seems greed got the better of Spain, who—as the old potato chip commercial once said— couldn’t have just one. In the end he made it into the books; just not the ones he was hoping for.

This truly incredible giant was shot by Kevin last week in Kansas. Double beams and double drops and mass to match and scores 270! Also people in the string of emails went on to say, “much deserved buck for a great guy…fair chase…and that he shot it on video in rifle season.”

It’s always so nice to hear positive thoughts form other hunters! Congrats to Kevin on a true once in a lifetime deer.

I have a feeling we will be seeing pics of this giant for years to come.

What a Mess!

EUGENE, Ore. – A deer got its antlers caught in Christmas lights on Monday.

“It was seen yesterday morning dragging these lights behind it,” wildlife biologist Brian Wolfer with theOregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said Tuesday, “and originally the bundle of lights were pretty loose but as the morning wore off it started tightening up around the deer’s neck.”

“If the lights had just been wrapped around the antlers, it wouldn’t have been a big deal because the bucks will shed their antlers in late winter so it would have lost the lights at that point,” Wolfer said, “but because it was wrapped around the deer’s neck it had the ability to restrict air flow or restrict the ability to eat or swallow.”

Biologists tranquilized the deer so they could untangle the strand of lights from its antlers and throat.

Here we go, again with another Big Big buck out of KS!! Awesome deer from the President of Hoyt Archery.

This just in from Hoyt President, Randy Walk:
Dear Friends,

As many of you know, I have been bowhunting my entire life. I grew up in a bowhunting family and archery and bowhunting have simply been a way of life for me. Living in Utah, it is well known that I have a deep passion for hunting big mule deer as well as elk and the other western big game species. But I also love to hunt other big game

and have hunted in many other states, most of the provinces and territories of Canada, Alaska, and Africa.

What many may not realize is that I have also come to love bowhunting whitetail deer and have been doing so for more than 20 years. I shot my first whitetail about 20 years ago and have since taken several nice bucks. Bowhunting whitetail deer is as different from hunting mule deer as it gets and it takes a very different approach and hunting style. I think this is why I fell in love with whitetail hunting as it presents a whole new set of bowhunting challenges.

Over the last 9 years I have been hunting whitetail deer in central Kansas with my very good friend Jay Verzuh. I have had some fantastic hunting experiences in Kansas hunting with Jay and over the last 9 years I have seen some really big whitetail bucks. I have taken a couple of nice bucks and have shared some great experiences with Jay and other hunting partners many of whom I work with at Hoyt.

On November 6th, 2012 I had the most amazing whitetail deer hunting experience of my life. Mid-morning I spotted a giant buck working a tree line about 300 yards across an open field. Over the next hour or so, I would get a glimpse of him from time to time as he worked in and around the trees working a group of does. Soon after, I watched him chase a smaller buck out of the trees and ran him half way across the open field in my direction, but stopped and returned to the tree line. About 30 minutes later, the giant buck stepped out of the trees, looked across the open field, and began to trot my direction. The buck came straight into me and I drew my bow when he was at 25 yards. The buck ran up to the edge of the tree line where I was on stand and stopped at less than 10 yards. I had no open shot and held my draw until he began to move. He continued on into the tree line and I was able to get my shot off at less than 5 yards!

He is a giant buck. 18 points total with 9 on each side. He has been green scored at 225 inches and some change and is clearly the largest whitetail deer I have ever seen on the hoof or on the ground for that matter.

I feel very fortunate to have had the chance at this giant deer and grateful that my 37 years of bowhunting experience took over and allowed me to be successful.

I hope you all enjoy the photo and good luck to you with all your bowhunting adventures.

Kansas again!

What a deer and what a cool success for Jeff! Jeff Danker is host of Major League Bowhunter shooting big deer to him is no stranger!

Jeff knew this deer and had nicknamed him Huckleberry.  He hunted hard for 17 days straight on his lease before his date with this awesome Buck. During those 17 days he passed up multiple 160- and 150-class deer, talk about holding out!

Than that all ended on the evening hunt of October 3, when Huckleberry came into bow range and Jeff let his Bear Motive 7 send that perfect arrow on its way. Jeff feels this buck is even more special because he hunted hard, hunted smart and, most of all, trusted his instincts to get the job done.

Frost equals the end to EHD!

I have never ever celebrated the first frost as much as I have this year. EHD has really put a major hurt on my farm here in MI and as well in Illinois where my lease is. Sadly my MI farm was really in the heart of the most reported cases of EHD. I have been part of finding over 33 here in Southern MI. My lease in Illinois is around 20 that we have found.

Right Now the state of MI has over 8490 confirmed EHD deaths. Illinois has reports of 40 of the 106 counties in the state with EHD.

I am going to breathe a little easier knowing its over for this year, but the damage has really been done and the recover process begins.

Here are sadly some of the deer I’ve found between MI and ILL (caution graphic)

IA giant! like always!

Here is some info I get passed along to me! Congrats to Fred who grew up in MI! What a giant! Dream come true for some.

“This hunt started last year when I picked up a nice 5 point side. It was 72 inches but I couldn’t even imagine what he would turn into. Saturday night was my first night in the stand looking for a buck and it was pretty typical, wind swirling and every deer in the field blowing at me when they came out, lol. Right before dark I had a doe in front of me getting real nervous and I didn’t even have my bow in my hand because I figured it was over. Right before she bolted I seen her take a hard look towards the standing corn and out stepped this guy at 45 yards. He was immediately nervous. As he stood there I said a little prayer hoping he would turn. Finally as he started to walk off I got to my bow and got pulled back. I stopped him at 45 yards and let him have it. He took off on a death run and went crashing through the timber. Unsure of the shot I came back in the morning. The blood was spotty at best. After a quarter mile I found where he crossed into a deep creek. When I got down into the bottom he stood up and was looking right at me behind a brush pile. Somehow I got to full draw and buried one in him. He ran 100 yards and flipped over. I was speechless when I found him, i knew he was big but couldn’t imagine this. 89″ 5 point side, 102″ nt side, rough 215″ gross. His ten point frame is 200″ and I think he will net 208″ nt. Still need to get some judgment calls on how to score some of the points but he is frickin big either way. Deer of a lifetime for me, he is what dreams are made of!”
